01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
On the first floor of Hashimoto Building, down an alley in Ueno, Bar Soratsuna has an unpretentious, welcoming feel. It’s a comfortable place to drop in for a drink. A good place to start is the bar’s signature Original Ginger Highball, made with homemade ginger syrup topped up with soda. Reviewers describe a pronounced ginger flavor, restrained sweetness and a clean, refreshing finish.
The back bar displays Japanese whiskies including Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki and Chita. The drinks list also ranges from Japanese and international beers to hot wine and the bar’s own sangria. There are also fruit sours made with frozen fruit, tea-based drinks and sake available by the 180 ml serving, so it’s easy to choose a glass to suit the occasion or your mood.
For snacks, there’s an assorted platter served with a drink of your choice, as well as thoughtful small plates such as fresh ginger, chikuwa fish cake and shiso rolled together, and iburigakko with cream cheese. Heartier options include thick-cut bacon, yakisoba topped with a fried egg and takoyaki. They make it possible to settle in with a drink and something more substantial.
With a calm atmosphere and counter seating, the bar is an easy place to stop alone or take a relaxed break during a trip. On a pleasant evening, reviewers have also enjoyed a drink outside on the terrace, with the night air making it a relaxed way to wind down in Ueno.
